February 6, 2012

Wait ... There's More

Two Views of Poverty: Abandoning people hard hit by poverty is wrong for Pennsylvania. Read Sharon Ward's op-ed in the Sunday Patriot-News.

Kids in Study Hall Instead of Math Class: Five years of state service cuts are taking a real toll on Pennsylvanians. Read our new Price of Service Cuts series.

Revenue Checkup: Corporate taxes are sluggish, despite healthy profits, but other tax streams are doing well. Look for our latest Revenue Tracker later this week.

Good Food and the Budget: Who could ask for anything more? Register for PBPC's Budget Summit which will be held at the Harrisburg Hilton on Thursday, Feb. 23. Registration is free and lunch is included.

Governor Tom Corbett will release his second budget this week, and if history repeats itself, we can expect more of the same — more cuts to education and health services and more silence on corporate tax loopholes.

The Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center (PBPC) will be there providing you with real-time information and analysis on the budget throughout the week.

MONDAY: Tune in to the Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) Call-In Show at 7 p.m. Monday for a budget preview with PBPC Director Sharon Ward who will square off against Matthew Brouillette of the Commonwealth Foundation. Call in with your questions: 1-877-726-5001.

TUESDAY: Governor Corbett will deliver his budget address to a joint session of the state Legislature at 11:30 a.m. Watch it on PCN and follow PBPC on Twitter as we live-tweet the speech. We will have budget spreadsheets at our web site by midday, followed by a preliminary analysis of most departments that evening.

WEDNESDAY: Start your day off by reading Sharon Ward's op-ed on the Governor's budget plan in the Allentown Morning Call.

Then at 10 a.m. tune in to WHYY's Radio Times to hear Sharon put the budget in context and take questions from callers.

And at 1 p.m. dial in to PBPC's conference call to get the inside scoop on the budget (call-in number: (760) 569-7676; participant code: 453547).

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU. Go to our Facebook page this week and tell us what you think about the budget.
